Recently, I had the opportunity to visit an amazing children’s bookstore in Tustin called Once Upon A Storybook!  They are a unique children’s bookstore in Orange County, specializing in classic and contemporary literature for babies to teens.

I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with Owner Susie exploring the store and learning all about her creative endeavors and heart for the community that she serves.

When I first walked into Once Upon A Storybook it was like walking into a story wonderland!  There were many wonderful books at arms reach even for the smallest reader.

I had so much fun talking with Susie about her shop, the joy it brings her and how much she loves sharing books with children.

I told her about my eldest son Athan and how he doesn’t like to read books that I pick out for him.  He also won’t pick out any books for himself.

Susie suggested that I let Athan pick a book out by the art on the cover.  I laughed because I have always heard that “you can’t judge a book by its cover.”  Susie reassured me that this is true of people, but not of books.  She said publishers spend millions of dollars on artwork.  So if the art speaks to a reader, then the book will too!

Susie picked out a few titles for me to snap a picture of and send to Athan (gotta love iMessage!).  He got right back to me and told me which one he wanted to try – Tales of a Sixth Grade Muppet.

And guess what?  Susie was right!  Athan read Tales of a Sixth Grade Muppet in one day!  Then he asked for the next on,  and the next one, and so on.  Before long Athan had devoured all four books in the series.

Once Upon A Storybook offers their customers a variety of special perks including:

  • a room for rent for parties, events, and classes
  • a special educators discount of 20% (homeschooling parents included!)
  • special help from Susie herself on choosing books for all ages, even those reluctant readers like my Athan.
  • frequent buyer program, spend $100 get $10 to spend in store.
