Space cadets unite!  There are a lot of “out of this world” space events coming to Southern California in October.  Previously, I shared with you about JPL’s Community Open House on October 10 & 11 in Pasadena and The Discovery Cube OC’s newest space exhibit in Santa Ana called Mission Control.  If you love space, then you might also enjoy my previous post called 19 Space Field Trips for Kids in Southern California.

Now this coming October we have another space adventure to look forward to!  Journey to Space: The Exhibition opens at the California Science Center in Los Angeles on October 29!

Journey to Space: The Exhibition

Journey to Space: The Exhibition invites guests to examine the challenges and innovative solutions required for human space exploration. Get a feeling for what space is like, how we are learning to live and work in space, and how we are preparing for bolder and more distant missions.

Through hands-on exhibits and immersive experiences, explore the science and technology developed by scientists to protect astronauts from radiation, meteoroids, temperature extremes, and the vacuum of space. Hear the stories of astronauts and rocket scientists, take a turn managing the energy of a simulated orbiting space station, operate a robotic arm, and find out how astronauts eat, sleep, and even go to the bathroom in space.

Exhibition highlights include a real glove used by Neil Armstrong and a rotating chamber inspired by the International Space Station’s Destiny Module that guests can enter to feel the disorientation of an environment with no up or down.

Designed with the help of astronauts and space scientists, Journey to Space: The Exhibition will inspire the astronaut and scientist in all of us.

Journey to Space 3D film

The California Science Center is also hosting the Journey to Space 3D film on their 7-story IMAX screen.  Journey to Space 3D is an inspiring reflection on the remarkable achievements of NASA’s Space Shuttle program, including the assembly and launch of the International Space Station and the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope.  Missions like these have taught us how to live, build, and conduct science in space and helped to build the foundation for future space exploration.  The film also features a fascinating showcase of the exciting plans that are underway for the next giant leap into space: landing humans on Mars.

Field Trip Bonus Offer!

The California Science Center is offering FREE IMAX tickets for student groups (grades 1-8) who book a paid school field trip to the Journey to Space: The Exhibition between October 29 – December 18, 2015.   For complete details and guidelines see here.

If you are a homeschool family, I would recommend attending one of The California Science Center’s Homeschool Days while visiting the Journey to Space: The Exhibition.

The California Science Center is located 700 Exposition Park Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90037.  Parking costs $10 for the day.

Happy Field Tripping!
