A Picture Tour Through The Music Instrument Museum in Phoenix

Last month, I had the opportunity to tour a very rare museum in Phoenix, Arizona called the Music Instrument Museum.  I describe the museum as “rare”, because it’s chock full of rare instruments from all over the world.  In fact, the museum curator gets calls daily from people around the world asking if they can donate an instrument to the museum.

The Music Instrument Museum is a huge treasure trove of instruments, which displays more than 6,000 instruments collected from around 200 of the world’s countries and territories.  Most displays are enhanced by state-of-the-art audio and video technologies that allow guests to see the instruments, hear their sounds, and observe them being played in their original contexts—performances that are often as spectacular as the instruments themselves.

Guests are introduced to MIM through the Orientation Gallery on the first floor, which showcases the artistry, diversity, and movement of musical instruments from around the world.  On the second floor, guests can venture into different regions of the world to discover the complete orchestra of a Chinese opera, a big-band jazz ensemble, or all the instruments of a mariachi band, among other things.

MIM offers free headsets for visitors to use on their tour.  The headsets are perfect for little ones because you don’t need to press any buttons to hear the correct audio content and instead of a boring lecture, they just hear music!  Guests are also welcome to bring their own personal headphones for use during their visit.
