Is your child in need of academic tutoring? Do they struggle in a particular subject in school? Recently, I had the opportunity to invite Marion from Everly – an on-demand, in-home, one-on-one tutoring company for grades K-12 – to meet with my 7-year-old daughter for a personal tutoring session.
Field Trip Girl usually does well in school, but sometimes struggles with reading, particularly in the areas of phonics and decoding. Plus, now that Common Core has been fully implemented, educators have raised the Lexcile expectations for each grade level. A Lexcile score is a popular method used by schools to measure a student reader’s ability. My daughter needed some extra help to help raise her score.
About Everly Tutoring Services
To schedule her tutoring session with Everly, I simply downloaded their on-demand tutoring app on my iphone and set up a personal account. It took all of 5 minutes! From there, I selected the grade level of my daughter, the date and time that I needed the tutor to come and the subject matters that she needed help with.
The next day, Marion from Everly, arrived right on time. My first impression of Marion was that she very kind and considerate. She also asked my daughter a few questions about herself to get to know her better. I could tell right away that my daughter liked Marion too. Usually, when I ask Field Trip Girl to sit down and do her homework, she whines a little and tries to get out of it. But not with Marion. On the contrary, Field Trip Girl sat right down and started working immediately on the worksheets that Marion gave her.
I was also impressed with how Marion came prepared for the tutoring session. She brought with her a stack of assessment sheets to go over with my daughter and to help her determine where Field Trip Girl was academically.
My daughter was also very attentive when working with Marion. Normally, I have to coach my daughter to stay on task when doing her homework. I even told Marion that Field Trip Girl would probably need a few breaks to help her get her wiggles out. But in fact, I was wrong! They only took one 5-minute break when Field Trip Girl asked to show Marion her Lego collection. Marion kindly obliged.
After the tutoring session was over, Marion showed me the assessment sheets that she completed with Field Trip Girl. She also gave me some suggestions on how I could help her with her reading in the future. For example, my daughter likes to skip and make up words while reading. However, with Marion, she slowed down a lot and focused on reading one word at a time. I also noticed, when Marion asked my daughter to use her finger to underline the words, she focused even more. These are great academic skills she can use in the classroom too.
I would characterize Marion’s teaching style as slow and steady with a lot of personal engagement. At one point, she even showed my daughter a picture of a horse on her cell phone, after they had just read about a horse in a story. What a unique way to bring the story to life!
Overall, Everly is like the “Uber of tutoring”. They have revolutionized the tutoring industry by creating a smartphone app and website that provides parents with highly qualified tutors and peace of mind, on demand.
Furthermore, Everly has plans to add additional services such as online tutors, test prep, music lessons and more in the near future. But for those of use who live in Orange County or Los Angeles, we can take advantage of Everly’s tutoring services right away!
