You don’t have to spend a fortune or waste hours on the road in traffic, and you get to have all the comforts of home. What’s not to love about that? Learn how to plan your next staycation with these 4 tips!

The idea of a family staycation is to enjoy quality time with your family away from work.  It’s not a time to do household chores.  Perhaps that’s why so many people choose to actually go somewhere for vacation instead of staying home.  It can be too tempting to work instead of play.

But with the right amount of preparation, you can have a family staycation that actually feels like a REAL vacation. You don’t have to spend a fortune or waste hours on the road in traffic, and you get to have all the comforts of home. What’s not to love about that?

Whether you choose to staycation because of finances or not having enough vacation time to take a trip, the right mindset and preparation will help make your staycation be the best vacation you’ve had in years.  How often are you able to truly relax and enjoy yourself at home without worrying about lawn care, DIY projects or cleaning?

How To Plan A Staycation

Step #1 – Select a theme and stock up on supplies.

The first thing you need to do is stock up on supplies before your staycation begins.  Make a list of everything you’ll need for some great barbecue meals, quick and easy breakfasts and of course dessert for the kids.

If you want to choose a kid-friendly theme for your staycation, you can purchase décor that will make your home feel like a beach resort.  Just ask your kids !  They will come up with all sorts of clever ideas.

Step #2 – Prepare your home and inbox.

Clean the house so that you won’t be tempted to do housework while you’re on your staycation.  Make sure you get garbage bags, disposable plates and plastic ware so that you won’t have to do dishes either.  There should be no running out to the grocery store during your staycation!

Next, make sure that everyone knows that even though you will be home, you are on vacation!  Seriously!  This means setting up auto reply emails and letting everyone from work know that you will be unreachable.  There’s nothing more disappointing than being deep in a game of monopoly with your children and have it spoiled by an unexpected work call.  You’re on vacation; act like it!

Step #3 – Reconnect with your family

Take advantage of being uninterrupted to reconnect with your spouse and kids.  Go for a family hike together, go swimming in the pool or even watch the sunset on the beach.  Other activities my family likes to do is play board games together like Uno, Apples to Apples, Clue, The Game of Life and checkers.

If there are movies that your family wants to see, make sure to visit a Redbox location or check if they are streaming on Netflix.   You can even plan one night as a movie night, and turn it into a family slumber party in the living room with snacks galore.

The main key to staycation-ing is to not go too far from home!  Yes, make it a verb – STAYCATION-ING!  By actively choosing to vacation at home, you may be surprised at how little you want to go anywhere.

The Benefits of a Staycation

The financial advantage of a family staycation is one benefit, but the mental and physical advantages of not having to stress over reservations, travel, and being away from home are even better.  Imagine not having to board your pets or arrange for someone to get your mail.  A staycation offers peace of mind and real relaxation if you plan it right!

Happy Staycationing!
