On Saturday, I took my daughter and a few friends to see Cavalia Odysseo in Irvine, California. Cavalia Odysseo has returned to Irvine for the holidays, premiering on November 16, 2016 and running through January 8, 2017! For my daughter, it was the first time she had seen the show. So before it started, I took her on a tour around the property. The iron horses out front was a new sight for me.
It was a gorgeous autumn day in Southern California and the sunset taking place over the performance tent was stunning to watch.
We got a little preview of the dance and rhythmic abilities of the African acrobatics troupe before the show began. The men were singing and dancing and chanting songs in their native tongue. It was beautiful to listen to.

Cavalia Odysseo, with 65 horses and 45 artists, is the biggest touring show in the world housed under a tent the size of two football fields. Creator Normand Latourelle is the artistic genius behind Cavalia, which brings horse lovers and theater-goers together to experience the magic of the show.
The effort and magnitude of putting together such a production is mind-blowing. Let’s start with the 65 horses that are displayed in the show, all of which are trained for 6 years prior to taking the stage. Each horse is from a certain discipline; either jumping, liberty, trick riding, dressage or Cossack.
The horses were beautiful and performed amazing feats in synchronized fashion yielding to the voices of their amazing trainers. Even at one point in the show, when one certain horse decided to move away from the other horses, the trainer simply whispered one word to him and he returned back to the pack. He was a very free-spirited horse!
After a stellar array of equestrian acrobatics, including summer salts, standing on horses and vaulting, a mechanical carousel descended from the ceiling before our very eyes. A talented group of acrobats suspended themselves from the poles while seemingly able to defy gravity. They hung horizontally by only the use of their hands and did aerial tricks that were spectacular.
Personally, my favorite part of Cavalia Odysseo, was the troupe of African acrobats discovered tumbling on the sands of a village in Guinea. They did flips and aerial somersaults front and back across the stage unlike any other gymnast I have ever seen. The speed in which they jumped and leaped in the air was captivating and for sure, would have received a double gold medal in the Olympics. It was that astonishing!
