How to Make a Boo Kit for Halloween

Happy Halloween!  Okay, not quite yet, but almost!

What do you do to celebrate Halloween?  We like to keep it pretty upbeat and focus on sharing the fun of the holiday with our family, friends and neighbors.  I am known around the neighborhood as the “friendly neighbor”.  I like to make people feel extra special around the holidays.  For instance, on Easter I like to leave candy filled Easter eggs at people’s doorsteps along with a card.  For Christmas, I bake many trays of fresh cookies and deliver them to my neighbors.  Even on St. Patrick’s Day, the lucky leprechaun apparently gives my neighbors a handful of chocolate gold coins.  Silly, I know!  But it so fun to make people feel special!

For Halloween, my family enjoys participating in a neighborhood tradition called BOO’ing!  Sometimes called “Ghosting” or “the Phantom”, Halloween BOO’ing is an Autumn take on the traditional “Secret Santa”.  Usually seen in neighborhoods–but sometimes in the workplace–BOO’ing is a friendly tradition for Halloween fun.

To start a Halloween BOO’ing tradition, one neighbor secretly leaves a small gift basket, BOO’ing card, BOO’ing instructions and a BOO’ing sign at their neighbor’s doorstep.  The lucky recipient is asked to post the sign near their own door, alerting others that they’ve been BOO’d.  That way, new BOO’d recipients won’t leave a duplicate BOO’ing gift on their doorstep.  In turn, the neighbor is asked to BOO another household, leading to a chain reaction–and Halloween fun.

Then watch the BOO’ing signs proliferate!  Soon, the entire neighborhood is sporting signs, and everyone is guessing “Who’s been Boo’d?”

Want to get in on the fun?  Here’s how to create your own BOO’ing gift basket and start a BOO’ing tradition in your neighborhood!

How To Make A Halloween Boo Kit

First, gather up your supplies.  You will need the following supplies to create a BOO Kit:

  • Plastic Pumpkin
  • Tissue Paper
  • Candy
  • Soda Cans
  • Halloween decor
  • Printable BOO card

1. Add tissue paper to bottom of the plastic pumpkin.  I like to do this prior to putting in the candy, because it helps to prop up all the items in the gift basket a little better.

2. Add the candy.  I used the Chocolate Mix Fun Size and Mars Mixed Minis for my BOO Kit.

3. Add the soda cans.  I prefer the 7UP® 8oz 6pk and A&W 8oz 6pk because of their cute Halloween cans.

4. Add the Halloween decor.  I selected a few Halloween inspired straws, glow in the dark glasses and a BOO glitter sign to accent my basket.

5. Add a printable BOO card.  You can find samples on line that are easy to print out and sign.  Include the card when gifting your BOO bundles to your neighbors.
