MYTHBUSTERS: THE EXPLOSIVE EXHIBITION & GIVEAWAY
THE DISCOVERY SCIENCE CENTER IN OC!
JUNE 14 – SEPTEMEBER 7
What is a myth? According to Wikipedia “A myth is a story that may or may not be true. The definition of the word myth is still subject to debate. Myths may be very old or new (for example: urban myths). There may not be records or other proof that they happened, but at least some parts of the myth may be true.”
That’s exactly what the new summer MYTHBUSTERS: THE EXPLOSIVE EXHIBITION at The Discovery Science Center is all about. To prove whether specific long held myths are true or not.
Last weekend my son and I were invited by The Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, CA to check out the new MythBusters exhibit. I decided to bring my son, because his #1 favorite subject in school is science.
My hypothesis was proven true when he spent over an hour and a half exploring all the different aspects of the exhibit.
MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition is based off of the reality TV show MythBusters.
MythBusters made its television debut on the Discovery Channel in 2003 and is hosted by Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, and cohosted by Tory Belleci, Kari Byron and Grant Imahara.
The show mixes the scientific method with gleeful curiosity and plain old-fashioned ingenuity to create a signature style of explosive experimentation. To date, MythBusters has tested 833 myths and have performed approximately 792 explosions and destroyed 146 vehicles.
The purpose of the show is to inspire a generation to inquire, interact and get involved with science by using experimentation to prove or disprove popular myths, misconceptions or legends.
MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition will show you how to uncover the truth behind some of science’s most popular myths.
Will running in the rain keep you drier than walking?
Can an airplane really take off from a conveyer belt moving the opposite direction?
Think you can hang off a ledge like an action hero?
Can you change as a fast as a superhero?
My favorite exhibit was the one where you got to pull a tablecloth off the table and see if the dishes would fall down. The conclusion? Sometimes!
In addition to hands-on experiments, you can explore props and gadgets from the show.
Or participate in the live MythBusting Show presented by The Discovery Science Center.
My son’s favorite exhibit was The Big Bad Wolf! Growing up, the “The Three Little Pigs” fairy tale told us that the Big Bad Wolf was incapable of blowing down a house of bricks. Well, this experiment lets you see how bricks really stack up. My son built his own miniature house with materials of three varying densities, which represent straw, wood and brick, then put his structure to the test using the MythBusters’ version of the wolf—a chamber with an air cannon that packs a pretty mean “huff and puff.”
The MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition runs from June 14 – September 7 at The Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana.
The cost to see the exhibit is $10 plus the price of general admission ($12.95 children / $16.95 adults).
Here’s a few pointers when visiting The Discovery Science Center:
1. Every year around the end of August, first part of September, the DSC offers a great group rate for school field trips. I scheduled a field trip last year for our homeschool group during this time. Please call for details.
2. The DSC is currently hosting a special Family Membership Pass deal.
3. Plan to spend at least an hour exploring the exhibit with your family.
4. There is a little bit of everything for everyone in the exhibit. However, I found it most attractive for children ages 6+.
In continued celebration of SoCal Field Trips’ 6 Month Anniversary, The Discovery Science Center is giving away a FAMILY FOUR PACK OF TICKETS to see MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition.
