If you’re a dog lover, you know that dogs are like family – like, human family!   To a dog person, there isn’t much difference between a human family member and a furry one.  We love them both.  The best part about owning a dog is that they love you unconditionally, no matter what.  And for that rare quality, this affection is reciprocated tenfold.

In our family, that one special dog is Field Trip Dog!  He is a rescue puppy that we got two years ago from a local animal rescue in Southern California.  He was surrendered by his previous owners who could no longer care for him and apparently there was mistreatment involved.  Field Trip Dog was only 5 months old at the time when we got him.  But now he is a healthy, happy 2-year-old with a big, bright future ahead of him.

How To Test Your Dog’s DNA

Yet one mystery still remained!  What type of breed was Field Trip Dog?  I thought he was part Bichon Frise and Jack Russell, while my husband believed he was a combination of Rat Terrier and Miniature Poodle.  So instead of guessing, we decided to get Field Trip Dog’s DNA tested using the Wisdom Panel® Canine DNA Test(s).  We wanted to solve this mystery once and for all!

Testing Field Trip’s Dog DNA was easier than I thought.  First, I filled out a quick survey online and then ordered the Wisdom Panel DNA kit to be delivered to my home.

Once it arrived, my son swabbed Field Trip Dog’s cheek with 2 q-tips provided by the manufacturer, and then we mailed it back to Mars Veterinary.

I selected Wisdom Panel to test Field Trip Dog’s DNA, because they have the largest breed database on the market covering 250 breeds, types and varieties.  The test uses 1,800 markers for breed and disease detection and a proprietary algorithm that makes more than 18,000,000 calculations before assigning a final family tree.

Also knowing the breeds in your dog can help you proactively plan for their individual health, nutrition and behavioral/training needs.  For example, I thought I could tell the breeds in Field Trip Dog by simply looking at his physical traits.  But that wasn’t true.  Visual identification even by professionals is only accurate about 25% of the time.  That means 75% of the time they are wrong!  And guess what…I was too!

Approximately 14 days later, I got his results back via email.  Mars Veterinary discovered that Field Trip Dog was 25% Chihuahua, 25% Terrier Family and 50% Miniature Poodle.  Now, the terrier and poodle part I was not surprised by, but the 25% Chihuahua threw me for a loop.  I had no idea he was part Chihuahua!  I never would have guessed.  But later on, when I talked to his pet sitter, she said this might explain why he is so loyal.

She told me that Chihuahuas both demand and give affection to anyone who they trust.  They are very strong willed, intensely loyal and become extremely attached to their owner if treated correctly.  However, they are also extremely suspicious of people who they do not know, because of their incredible bond to their owner.

Now that I know this about Field Trip Dog, I understand why it takes him a little longer to warm up to new people that he doesn’t know.  But once he sniffs you out, and you give him a treat, you are his best friend forever.  I want to use Field Trip Dog’s breed information to develop a training program that works with his natural instincts, not against them.

Additionally, since learning about Field Trip Dog being 50% Miniature Poodle, I plan to change the way I groom him.  Before I simply used some random clippers to give him a haircut.  Now, I want to take him to a professional groomer to get him one of those cute lion cuts you see on TV!

So tell me, what type of mixed breed dog do you own?  Are you interested in getting his or her DNA tested?  I highly recommend checking out Wisdom Panel to unlock the mystery of your little fur ball like mine!

Happy Testing!

I own 3 mixed dogs. First is a sharpei/husky/german shepherd/rottweiler mix, the second is a boston terrier/boxer, and the third is a pitt/lab. The breed of my dogs isn't super important to me so it's not something I'd really be willing to investigate BUT i think this would be a super awesome science activity for kids! I will have to keep this in mind when my little gets older. Thank you so much for sharing!
