Marty McFly: So what does this thing run on…gasoline?

Dr. Emmett Brown: No! It requires something with a little more kick…plutonium!
Marty McFly: Wait, Doc, are you telling me…that this sucker is nuclear?
Dr. Emmett Brown: No, no, no! The plutonium is required to generate the 1.21 jigawatts needed to power the car!

Do you remember this famous movie line?  If so, then you are a true Back To The Future fan!   Now you can get up close and personal with the real DeLorean DMC-12 time machine in LA!

The DeLorean DMC-12 time machine, made famous by the 1985 smash hit Back to the Future, will be on display, courtesy of Universal Studios Hollywood, at the Petersen Automotive Museum starting on Friday, April 22, 2016.  This also marks the first time the on-screen hero car has been at the museum.

However, before heading to the Peterson Automotive Museum to see the original DeLorean DMC-12 time machine, check out these cool facts according to The Geek Twins.com.

  • Early in the script the time machine was a laser device in a room.  The climax had it attached to a refrigerator on a truck which was driven to a nuclear test site with Marty inside. They changed it to lightning because they were afraid kids would lock themselves in refrigerators.
  • Producer Steven Spielberg used the idea of the refrigerator at a nuclear test site for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. So, Back to the Future almost “Nuked the Fridge.”
  • The license plate used in the film says “OUTATIME”, but the DeLorean’s registered license plate is actually “3CZV657”.
  • The DeLorean was chosen because it’s doors and design made it look like a UFO for the barn crash scene.
  • The doors would fail when cold and the crew had to use hairdryers to warm them between takes.
  • Marty hitting his head wasn’t in the script, but they added it after the doors kept falling on the actor’s.
  • Because of a law by Jimmy Carter, American models of the DMC-12 had speedometers that only read up to 85 miles per hour.  The crew had to modify the speedometer with one that reached 95.  Thank you Jimmy Carter.
  • The unveiling will kick off a month-long celebration of the iconic car and film trilogy, including panel discussions, a DeLorean cruise-in and an ‘80s themed “Enchantment Under The Sea” dance; all events co-sponsored by Belkin and Mattel.

In addition to seeing the DeLorean DMC-12 time machine, make sure to visit the other vehicle collections on display.  Give yourself at least 2 hours to go through the entire museum.  More, if you’re a real car enthusiast, since the cars you will see are real gems and the details are worth the extra time spent.

The Petersen Automotive Museum is located at 6060 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90036.
