Books are the gateway to a child’s imagination! Unlike any other form of technology or print media, they open up your mind to new ideas, forms of thoughts and universes.
There is a wealth of research supporting daily reading with your child especially prior to and during the period when he or she is just learning to read. I like to read to Field Trip Girl first thing in the morning while she is eating breakfast or at night for 20 minutes before she goes to bed.
Reading is “brain food”. Our brains develop as we “feed” them with experiences. The more often you read to a child, the more experiences they build.
Reading helps to develop listening skills. The joy of being read to helps children develop listening skills by keying them into the components of language.
Reading reading builds early literacy skills. Being read aloud to is one of the main ways children develop phonemic awareness and is the single greatest factor in a child’s ability to read later on in life.
Reading prepares children for kindergarten. Today’s kindergarteners are expected to enter the classroom on day one with knowledge of upper and lower case letters of the alphabet and the ability to recognize basic shapes, colors and count to ten.
Practice makes perfect. Research shows that children who have repeatedly been exposed to books from birth generally exhibit stronger reading skills.
Reading improves academic performance. There is a strong correlation between a child’s ability to read and her academic performance. Because so much of our schooling relies on our ability to read, children must have strong reading skills to succeed.
So last week I took my daughter to Walmart to purchase specifically marked Kellogg’s® products to earn FREE Scholastic books. Field Trip Girl wanted one book for her personal library and one for her new classroom! With back to school just a month away, it’s never too early to get ready!
Kellogg’s free Scholastic book program is very easy to register for!
Here is how it works:
First, you need to purchase one or more specifically marked Kellogg’s products that has the Free Book logo on it.
Field Trip Girl picked out Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Crunch® for breakfast (my personal favorite!) and Kellogg’s Special K® Protein Bars for snacks. We easily found them in the cereal aisle.
Inside the box you will find a special code that you will need to order your free book online. So make sure to save it!
Basically, 1 Kellogg’s product = 1 free, full-length Scholastic book. You can redeem up to 30 books. However, you only have 14 days from the original date of purchase to redeem a code for a free book. And all codes must be entered by 3/31/16.
Next you want to visit the Kellogg’s Family Rewards® website to redeem your code and order a free book.
Once on the website click “Join Now”.
Enter in your email address, password and birthday.
On the next page, they will ask you to enter in your contact information and answer a few brief questions.
Congratulations! You are now officially registered.
Next you want to enter your code. First, click on the “Enter Code” tab on the homepage.
Then in the field below enter your Kellogg’s Family Rewards® code from any specially marked Kellogg’s® products; then click “Submit” to earn or donate a Scholastic book.
Next scroll down to the bottom of the “Congrats” page and click on the “Get A Free Book” icon in order to select a book.
From here you can choose to order a book for either your personal library or donate one to your local school. For the sake of this tutorial, I will walk you through the process of how to order a book for your personal library.
Click on the “Choose Your Book” icon that says “Send a book to yourself, family or friends.”
Then select from one of the following levels: Beginning Readers, Middle Readers, Teen/Tween or Spanish/Bilingual.
Pursue the website and select a book for your child. I ordered Field Trip Girl Lalaloopsy: Star of the Show because is just starting to read.
Then press “Continue check out” to proceed.
Verify where you would like your book to be shipped by entering in your mailing address, email address and phone number.
Click “Place my order” and you are all done!
If you would rather donate a book to your local school, simply press the”Donate Your Book” icon and follow the directions. Your donated book will ship directly to the school you chose in an envelope that says it was generously donated by your family.
All Scholastic books will be mailed to you or wherever you choose to donate them FREE OF CHARGE! The official timeline for books to arrive is 6-8 weeks (even though most come much sooner).
You can also buy directly on Walmart.com and receive a free book from any purchases made between 7/21/15 and 9/11/15. Look for the Buy Now button at www.walmart.com/KelloggsBackToSchoolBooks for a list of all eligible items. Ecommerce redemptions are made via receipt scanning. There are 3 ways you can upload your receipt, via text, via scanning into your computer or Kellogg’s Family Reward app- – only when you purchase ONLINE between 7/21 – 9/11.
