Little Mermaid Legacy Collection Review, plus Giveaway!

Little Mermaid

I received the Little Mermaid Legacy Collection CD as a member of the Entertainment New Media Network.  No further compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

As a musician and parent of two young children, I am always on the look out for new and encouraging music to introduce my children to.  From classical to pop to broadway, Field Trip Boy and Field Trip Girl enjoy a wide span of musical genres in our household.

One of Field Trip Girl’s all time favorite show tunes is Part of That World from the movie The Little Mermaid.  Part of That World depicts the story of a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel who dreams of one day living above the sea in a new world of awe and wonder.

When I first received word that The Little Mermaid was celebrating its 25th anniversary since its releasemy heart skipped a beat!  It brought me back to a time when I was a sophomore in high school and saw the movie for the first time in the theaters.  Afterwards, I remember feeling all gitty inside!  I was in “la la land”, because I was dating a young lad at the time and hoped we too would live happily ever after just like Ariel and Prince Eric did!  Looking back, I now blame my state of disillusionment on my teenage hormones!

In honor of the 25th Anniversary of The Little Mermaid, Walt Disney Records has released a new version of the movie soundtrack titled Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid.

Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid takes you on a musical voyage you will never forget.  This beautiful book-bound two disc collectible set features the award winning music from the film, never before released demos and working tapes from Howard Ashman and Alan Menken and more.  Exclusively illustrated by the talented Lorelay Bove, WDR The Legacy Collection is a musical masterpiece every fan will enjoy.

Our family especially enjoyed listening to disc two in the series, which contains the original musical outtakes from the movie.  We had a great conversation about how musical scores are composed.  I shared with Field Trip Boy and Field Trip Girl that when you first record a song it is called a cut.  Typically a cut only includes one singer and one instrument.  From there, the composer refines the song by adding additional instrumentation and vocal harmonies.  Once the orchestra and vocalists have had a chance to practice the song together, they each go into the studio individually to record and lay down their tracks.  The final outcome is a beautiful recording like the Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid.

Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken said “The Legacy Collection reorganizes the material and allows the listener to be able to draw more out of it and enjoy it on another level.  Technology has improved over the decades and going back to the masters results in better representations of the material on these CDs.”

Commenting on disc two Menken adds, “I hope listeners experience some of our memories and I hope they take away, as I do, a lot of re-discoveries.  The demos of some of the song moments take the listener through the process of how they were developed, understanding what the authors wanted to communicate, and ultimately leading into what the song became.”
