As a family, transitioning from a relaxed summer schedule to a school year routine can be quite challenging.  So to help make the transition a little easier, I like to do a few back-to-school tasks ahead of time.

#1. Slowly adjust your children’s bedtime.

Slowly adjust your children’s bedtime back 30 minutes a day until you reach the normal time they go to bed during the school year.  I personally like to do this a week before school begins.  For many, this will consist of sleepy mornings and irritability that characterize the first few weeks of school.  But it’s better to do it now, than later!

#2. Make and freeze sandwiches ahead of time.

Make and freeze one week worth of sandwiches for school lunches ahead of time.  I like to do this on Sunday night while I’m preparing for the coming week.  It is one less thing I have to do on Monday morning.

#3. Shop for school supplies online.

When you shop for school supplies online, you save both time and money.  According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), the average American family spends more than $600 on back-to-school supplies.  I don’t spend quite that much, but it adds up quickly.  So to help cut our bottom line, I prefer to buy back-to-school supplies on the internet.  I also like to start shopping 2 weeks in advance to make sure everything arrives to my house on time.

#4. Post a back to school schedule on the wall.

New schedules are not fun for anyone.  However, everyone has to adjust somehow.  I help my kids adjust to the new back-to-school routine by posting a schedule on the wall one week before school begins.  This has been a life-saver for my family, because kids always like to know what is expected of them in advance.

#5. Prepare a first aid kit and store it on top of the refrigerator.

When it comes to heading back to school, you really don’t know what lies ahead.  Of course there’s first day jitters, homework help and after school activities.  But there are also unpredictable illnesses.  So to help get a head start on the cold and flu season, I like to make a first aid kit and put it on top of my refrigerator for storage.

Are you interested in creating your own first aid kit?  Here are some of the items that I put in my mine and easily found in the medicine aisle at Target.  Please read each bottle for storing directions.

To save money on back to school items I sometimes buy a full year ahead. Once lunchboxes and backpacks go on deep discount I buy extras. #client
