Disney On Ice Worlds of Fantasy

Written by Windi Eklund, SoCal Field Trips Guest Contributor

Last Thursday, my mom and I took my two younger kids, Hudson, age 7 and Bailey, age 2 to see Disney On Ice Worlds of Fantasy. Bailey was so excited to see an ice skating show, it’s all she could talk about! Hudson, on the other hand, was reluctant. In fact, it wasn’t until the day of the show that he decided he would join us.

We arrived at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, picked up our tickets and found our seats. The staff at the arena was exceptionally nice and helpful, and we were all impressed with their service. Our seats were amazing, pretty close to the front and smack- dab in the center.

While we were waiting for the show to start, Hudson saw a slushy vendor and flagged him down. My mom bought him the slushy in a light-up souvenir cup and he was stoked!

Suddenly the lights dimmed, the music swelled and Mickey and Minnie started the show!

Worlds of Fantasy was an incredible ride through some of our favorite Disney movies! First stop, Radiator Springs, where our favorite cars revived Mickey and Minnie’s broken down automobile.

After our adventure in Carburetor County, we next dove under the sea with the Little Mermaid to experience Ariel’s adventures with Flounder, Sebastian, Ursula, Prince Eric and lots of other (skating) fish. The skaters were amazing! I can hardly stay on my feet while ice skating in regular clothes, these skaters were wearing some amazing costumes and doing tricks on ice!

Disney On Ice World of Fantasy

For our third “World of Fantasy” we suddenly found ourselves witnessing Tinker Bell blooming to life in Pixie Hollow, complete with the Fairy God Mother flying above us all in the most amazing dress I’ve ever seen! We met all the fairies, learned their powers and enjoyed all the fairy fun!

After intermission, the lights dimmed once again and we were now in Andy’s room. We followed his beloved toys on an adventure through Toy Story 3, complete with Ken’s fashion show and Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear on skates, yes that big fluffy bear on ice skates!

Finally, Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy joined in to finish up the show in true classic Disney style!

The show is amazing and kids all around us were dancing, singing, oohing and ahhing! My kids had a great time and are already looking forward to their next Disney On Ice Show. For more information and tickets visit Disney On Ice Worlds of Fantasy.

Happy Field Tripping!

4 Grocery Store Field Trips for Kids in Southern California!

When a child goes on a field trip to their local grocery store they are learning about all sorts of new things!

  • Discover the behind-the-scenes activities of the grocery store (e.g., meat department, bakery, and
  • produce department).
  • Students are introduced to the food pyramid and healthy eating.
  • Recognize their favorite food and non-food products through advertising.
  • Become familiar with the farm-to-market system and how their food is sourced (local vs. non-local)
  • Explore the different roles (e.g., cashier, manager, stocker, bagger) of the grocery store.
  • Try samples of food or merchandise in the store.
  • Experience the concept of paying for goods and services with money.

In Southern California there are 4 local stores that offer Grocery Store Field Trips for Kids!  Whether you are looking to set up a  grocery store field trip for your homeschool co-op, school group or scout troop, make sure to call ahead to get all the details.

1. Bristol Farms (Hollywood, Manhattan Beach, Rolling Hills, Santa Monica, South Pasadena, West Hollywood, Westchester, Westwood, Newport Beach, Westlake Village, La Jolla and Palm Desert)

Bristol Farms offers a FREE 45 minute tour of their store for kids!  The idea group size is 15 – 20 children.  Kids have the opportunity to go through each department within the store and see how they operate.  Depending upon the age of your group, older children may hold a lobster while younger children decorate cupcakes.

2. Trader Joes (Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego Counties)

Trader Joe’s is known to have some of the friendliest staff in customer service!  They are more than willing to go out of their way to help their customers.  The same is true when you go on a FREE field trip to your local Trader Joe’s store.  During a tour, students learn about the daily operations of running a grocery store, explore health snack and lunch options and are given a little goody bag to take home at the end of the tour.

3. Ralph’s Speak Out – It’s Your Earth! (Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego Counties)

From the website, Speak Out. It’s Your Earth! is a FREE program that opens the doors of your neighborhood Ralphs store to teach valuable lessons about making choices during the shopping experience and how those choices impact the environment.  Conservation and environmental concepts, including how students’ actions impact the world, are explored during this community-based learning adventure.

Each stop provides important information about how the store is reducing its environmental footprint and how students can use those concepts in their own lives.  Children learn about practices that are good for their health and the planet’s health.  The field trips are reviewed by Field Trip Factory’s expert educators, and create memories that last a lifetime.

To prepare your students, pre-field trip activities are available under Resources!  Post-field trip activities are available after the trip to reinforce content.

The tour is ONLY available in April and advance reservations are required.

4. Whole Foods Market (Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Ventura Counties)

Whole Foods Market offers FREE tours for children at all of their local Southern California stores.  Tours can be tailored to meet the individual needs of your specific school group or community organization.

Tours can focus on:

  • Shopping for Value
  • Non-GMO
  • Quick Meal Fixes
  • Gluten-Free
  • Local Foods
  • Healthy Eating
  • Seafood Sustainability
  • Smart Snacks and Healthy Lunchbox Ideas
  • And more!

Tours are 45 minutes to one hour in length.  Please call your local Whole Foods Market and ask to speak with their Marketing Director for full details.

See The Magic Tree House® Traveling Exhibit at The Western Science Center in Hemet through May 24, 2015!

One of the first chapter book series that Field Trip Boy ever read was The Magic Tree House®.  I remember it was the summer after kindergarten, when I first introduced him to the book series.  He had just finished reading numerous early readers in class and I thought he was up for something a bit more challenging.  The Magic Tree House® series fit the bill perfectly!

Now that Field Trip Girl is also reading, I want to take both of my children to see the new The Magic Tree House® Traveling Exhibit at The Western Science Center in Hemet, California.

See The Magic Tree House® Traveling Exhibit at The Western Science Center in Hemet through May 24, 2015!

The The Magic Tree House® Traveling Exhibit opened on February 14th and runs through May 24, 2015.

“Created by the St. Louis Children’s Museum, and based on the best-selling children’s book series written by Mary Pope Osborne and published by Random House, the Magic Tree House® traveling exhibit allows visitors to branch out through history via a magical, time-traveling tree house.  Join Jack and Annie, as they are whisked away in time to experience three important  periods in American history: Thanksgiving on Thursday, Civil War on Sunday, and Twister on Tuesday.”

Per the Western Science Center’s website:

In Thanksgiving on Thursday, children can climb Plymouth Rock, dig for clams on the beach, help prepare the feast in a Pilgrim house and set the Thanksgiving table.

FREE Cooking Classes for Kids in SoCal!

Cooking

Do your children like to cook, play “kitchen” with their friends or gather around your feet while you make dinner?   Then turn that desire to help into action!  Southern California offers many FREE cooking classes for kids in our area!  From baking to healthy eating to creating delicious meals, your children are bound to find at least one cooking class that will satisfy their taste buds.

My family’s personal favorite are William-Sonoma’s Junior Chef Classes.  The classes are FREE and offered at various William-Sonoma stores throughout Southern California for children ages 5+.  My children have been a few times and really enjoy them.  However, my kids also like more hands-on activities so we prefer the Cake Baking and Easter Egg Dying classes.

In February, William-Sonoma are offering the following classes:

Feb. 14 @ 10 am – 52-New Foods: Stir-Frying

Stir up some delicious fun at the next class in our 52 New Foods series!  Together we’ll make Stir-Fried Chicken with Bok Choy.  It’s a fantastic dinner you can cook with your family—then claim the leftovers and pack in your lunch box to enjoy the next day.  Suitable for ages 9–13.

Feb. 21 @ 10 am – Homemade Chicken Fingers

Who doesn’t love chicken fingers—crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside.  Learn how to make chicken fingers that are so tasty, you won’t want to eat out again!  Suitable for ages 5 – 13.

Feb. 28 @ 10 am – Cake Baking, from Start to Frosting

Calling all bakers!  Want to make a cake that will wow your friends and family?  In this class we’ll bake a fabulous cake, make a creamy frosting and then sample our decadent creation!  Suitable for ages 5 – 13.

The best way to find a William-Sonoma’s Junior Chef Class near you is to visit their store locator and register over the phone or in person.

Mitsuwa in Torranace, a well-known Japanese supermarket chain, also offers FREE cooking classes for kids the first Sunday of every month.  They demonstrate how to cook Japanese food using various Japanese and other ingredients.  It is a rare experience where children get to learn, try and taste everything that they personally make.  In the past ,children have made hand rolled sushi, okonomiyaki (japanese pancake), bento boxes and more.

Mitsuwa’s classes tend to fill up rather quickly, so make sure to call ahead and register your child if interested.

Finally, not free, but close to it is Whole Foods’ Kids Cooking Class at The District in Tustin, California.  The class is held every other Friday and costs $5 per child.

Chef Cintia whips up kid friendly recipes that are easy, fun and delicious and talks about why it’s important to color your plate with healthy foods.  She plans healthy kid friendly recipes for the kids to make themselves.  The idea is that the kids may show an interest in eating healthy if they get to help make it.  RSVPs are required by emailing cintia.madrid@wholefoods.com.  You can learn more about this class on meetup.
