When I was six years old and finishing up first grade, my mother received a concerning report card from my teacher.  The teacher told her that I was struggling in school and gave me “unsatisfactory” markings in all areas of academics.  To my mom, this was sad news.  To me, I knew no different.  All I wanted was for summer to begin, so I could learn how to ride my new bike without training wheels (which actually didn’t go well and I broke my arm, but that story is for another day!).

When my mother received my not-so-happy report card, she did what every good parent parent should do.  First, she asked my teacher how my grades were weighted.  She learned that students were given either an S (Satisfactory), N (Needs Improvement) or U (Unsatisfactory) in the areas of reading, math, language, living science, history and spelling.  Generally speaking, first graders were expected to listen for sounds in words and to write the sounds they heard.  I also needed to understand simple addition and subtraction problems, count by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and work with two-and-three dimensional geometric shapes.  Whew!  That’s a lot of information for a six-year-old brain!

After meeting with my teacher, my mom came home and praised me.  She told me all the positive things my teacher said about me like I was a willing participant in class, kind to my fellow students and extremely outgoing, hence, the reason I got “needs improvement” in the area of talking on my report card. I talked too much and still do today!

Next, my mom came up with an action plan to help me improve my grades and do better in second grade.  She hired a local tutor in town named Mrs. Quinlin who worked out of the United Church of Christ building.

I immediately fell in love with Mrs. Quinlin!  She was inspiring, very uplifting and worked well with “active” students like me.  By the time I completed two years of tutoring with Mrs. Quinlin, I was performing at grade level and received all “satisfactories” markings on my report card.

My mother was quite proud of me.  However, more importantly, I learned to never give up and to keep on trying.  Making mistakes can be frustrating, but they are also positive reminders of the many ways that we can learn and grow from them.

How To Find The Right Tutor For Your Child

Back in the ’80s, when my mom was looking for a tutor, she didn’t have access to such powerful online tutoring resources as Varsity Tutors.  Instead, she had to go by word-of-mouth.  Now highly-qualified, knowledgable tutors are available at your fingertips through varsitytutors.com.

It definitely worked for me.  In the long run, I graduated top of my class and went off to college in Southern California.  I thank my mom every day for believing in me and finding the right tutor for the job.

Tutoring is an absolutely wonderful tool a parent can give. My parents always took me to after school tutoring to get assistance with work. And it really helped me be the student I am today.

Great suggestions for hiring a tutor. I am a tutor myself and a teacher. It is so important to find someone that knows what they are doing and will listen to your needs.

My son started kindergarten just recently! We have not had any issues or concerns as of yet, but I am always glad to find valuable information like this to refer to down the road, should anything come up. Thank you so much for sharing!
