Did you know that LA has a new museum in town?  It is called The Broad and opened on September 20 in Los Angeles.

The Broad is a new contemporary art museum founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles.  The museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler and offers free general admission.  The museum is home to the 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which is among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide.

The Broad Ticket Information

I have been meaning to get tickets to The Broad for sometime now, but with the holidays around the corner, my plans fell flat.  But not anymore!  Today I reserved free tickets for February 2016.  Yes, you read that right…February 2016!  Tickets to The Broad are such a hot commodity that they sell out months in advance.

You can reserve free tickets to visit The Broad on-line.  Advance ticket reservations for The Broad are timed slots throughout the year.   To beat the crowds, you can sign up for the Broad’s newsletter, which will send you a notification to reserve the tickets on Monday morning.

Once you do secure your reservations to The Broad and arrive at the museum, you’re going to want to make a reservation for Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirrored Room.”  This impressive exhibit features a room full of mirrors and LED-lights and can only accommodate one person at a time for a maximum of 45 seconds.  I have read that the Infinity Mirrored Room blows people’s’ minds!  It is that amazing!

The Broad’s School Tours

On Wednesdays between January and May 2016 at 9 a.m., The Broad museum will be hosting one-hour school visits in the hours before the museum opens to the public. These visits will offer teachers and students the chance to engage with contemporary art in the Broad collection through a new program, Art + Story, which includes materials and a creative writing activity developed through The Broad’s partnership with 826LA, a nonprofit writing and tutoring organization.

The Broad invited 826LA to develop creative writing exercises that invite students and their teachers to explore the artists’ creative process by engaging the same questions artists ask themselves when creating an artwork. These activities and materials, available in English and Spanish, will offer students and their teachers the opportunity to discover the Broad collection while developing critical and visual thinking skills through narrative, opinion, and informational writing prompts. Teachers will receive a PDF guide via email in advance of their visit to learn how to lead their classes in discussing the artworks and completing a story about them.  You must complete an online application to reserve a school visit.

The Broad is located at 221 S. Grand Avenue in downtown, (213) 232-6200.

Happy Field Tripping!
