Did you know that May 11, 2014 marks the 100th Anniversary of Mother’s Day? In 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson helped launch the national holiday with the stroke of a pen on a proclamation.
Today in Southern California there are numerous events that help us celebrate this time honored tradition!
From the Mother’s Day 5K in San Diego to the Elegant and Enchanting Rose Garden Tour in Orange County, there’s bound to be at least one event to please the mother or grandmother in your life.
To help you out, SoCal Field Trips has compiled a list of over 20 Mother’s Day events for your perusal!

LONG BEACH

Mother’s Day Pottery Painting Bagel Brunch at Earth Arts. Bring your Moms, Aunts, Grandmas, and create beautiful memories and beautiful pottery together this Mother’s Day. LOS ANGELES
Make a pretty soap to take home to the loved one in your life this Mother’s Day at Kid’s Space Museum in Pasadena. Ages 6 – 9.
Treat your mom to a lovely brunch at the American Girl Place and then wander the American Girl world together. Reservations required. Ages 3 and older. $22 per person.
FREE Admission to Zimmer’s Museum in LA on Mother’s Day! Kids, bring mom in to create special gifts and spend a wonderful day together.
Mother’s will be feted by Patina Catering in the Blue Ribbon Garden at the gleaming Disney Concert Hall in LA. Belgian Waffle Bar, Vienna Style Fried Chicken, Free Range Scrambled Eggs, Farmhouse Cheese Quiche and Honey Glazed Ham, will be complimented by a plethora of salads, breakfast pastries and desserts. House wine included. Seating is at 9:30 am and 12:30 pm. Advance reservations required.
ORANGE COUNTY
On May 10, take an Elegant and Enchanting Rose Garden Tour hosted by The Rose Society of Saddleback Mountain.
Now through May 11, The Irvine Regional Park is offering FREE train rides for all mothers and grandmothers. Plus FREE admission to The OC Zoo.
Don The Beachcomber in Huntington Beach is featuring 2 LIVE Polynesian Shows and a free gift for all Moms! Brunch includes a tasteful variety of traditional offerings such as Make-Your-Own-Omelet, Macadamia Nut Pancakes, Salmon, Carving Stations, Snow Crab, Salads, Pastas and Fruit as well as a delicious assortment of dessert and Hawaiian Shave Ice!
FREE Mother’s Day Fest at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach. Admission and parking are both FREE. Enjoy special handmade presents just for mom and live music by Jazzy Ash and the Leaping Lizards. This event is a proud partner in Art Orange County’s Imagination Celebration.
Attend the Mother’s Day Mystery Quilt event with Larene Smith at the Piecemakers Country Store in Costa Mesa. On Saturday, May 10, Polaris Art Studio for Kids and Solare Italian Restaurant are teaming up to bring moms and kids together for a morning of art and baking in honor of Mother’s Day. The event includes a one hour baking class at Solare and a one hour art class at Polaris.
Join the 20th Annual Mother’s Day Weekend Art & Garden Tour hosted by Off Track Gallery! On Saturday and Sunday, May 10th & 11th, take your favorite mom on a leisurely tour of several spectacular North County gardens and peek into a few art studios – all brimming with original works by local artists. Free refreshments will be served at every stop.
Participate in the second annual Mother’s Day 5K benefiting the San Diego Rescue Mission. This is a great way to kick off Mother’s Day with a healthy start before taking Mom out to brunch. Mother’s Day 5K is open to everyone from elite runners to casual walkers.
Attend the San Diego Botanic Garden’s famous Chocolate Festival on May 10. Enjoy dozens of delectable chocolate tastings, demonstrations, a chocolate fountain, and more. This family-friendly event also features children’s activities and a variety of Mother’s Day gifts. “Tasting” tickets will be sold on site.
SANTA BARBARA
Celebrate Mother’s Day at The Santa Barbara Zoo! The first 500 moms in attendance will receive flowers and a souvenir. A special Mother’s Day photo opportunity is available too. Animal keeper talks that day will focus on mothers in the animal world. How cute!
Enjoy Mother’s Day Brunch & Kids’ Kitchen Station at The Bacara Resort & Spa. Chef David Reardon’s extensive Champagne Mother’s Day Brunch will feature specialty omelets, assorted seafood and sushi, prime rib, farmers’ market fruits and vegetables, a special children’s menu, decadent desserts and more. To make the day extra special, Bacara will set up a Kids’ Kitchen station where children can help prepare made-to-order pancakes for their moms.
