STAR Repertory Theatre presents this sweeping tale of heartbreak, passion and the resilience of the human spirit at Avo Playhouse. 7. $27.50 Tickets to see Don Quixote: City Ballet of San Diego Dances the Classic Tale, San Diego

City Ballet of San Diego brings to life the landmark ballet Don Quixote performed to live music by City Ballet Orchestra under the direction of John Nettles. Choreographed by Marius Petipa, with music by Ludwig Minkus, this classic is packed with comedy, romance and fantasy. The ballet is based on Miguel de Cervantes’ classic Spanish novel about a dotty middle-aged man obsessed with tales of chivalry, who sets out with his servant, Sancho Panza, to defend virtue and punish those who violate the code of honor. The duo’s adventures take an unexpected turn when the would-be knight mistakes an innkeeper’s daughter for his dream-lover, Dulcinea. Experience this classical, full-length ballet masterpiece at Spreckels Theatre.

8. $29 Tickets to The Pirates Dinner Adventure, Buena Park

A Broadway-style extravaganza set aboard a replicated 18th-century Spanish galleon, Pirate’s Dinner Adventure is one of the only theater performances to require a 250,000-gallon water tank outside of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Manatees. While the dastardly Captain Sebastian the Black lords over his feasting crew of rapscallions, guests get to dine from the deck of one of the six ships surrounding the galleon—and cheer on the plucky pirate representing their vessel in the show. What unfolds is a swashbuckling spectacle of stunts, songs, magic, and acrobatics punctuated with as many fired cannons as belly laughs. Pirates dangle precariously from silk off the 40-foot mast. Treasure chests overflow with booty. Heroes rise from the ranks—and select members of the audience might even be invited by Captain Sebastian to come aboard the stage.

9. $15 Tickets to see the play Around the World in 80 Days @ The David Schall Theatre, Hollywood

Around the World in 80 Days whisks the bookmark from Jules Verne’s classic novel for a madcap journey without vaccinations or passports, teleporting audiences to the late 19th century by way of the stage. Eccentric aristocrat Phileas Fogg has placed a bet: in 80 days, he must circle the globe by balloon, train, steamboat, and hand-cranked elephant. At stake? Both his pride and his considerable fortune.

In Mark Brown’s lively, family-friendly adaptation, five accomplished performers take on the dirigible-sized challenge of portraying the 39 characters that populate Verne’s Victorian romp. Director Rhonda Kohl’s production, sophisticated enough to please the harshest child critics, but zany enough to appease hyperactive parents, creates a breathtaking steampunk world.

10. $20 for 2-Tickets to see a Standup-Comedy Show @ The Brea Improv (plus 2 tickets to see another future show), Brea

At Brea Improv, comics lure laughs as they follow in the footsteps of standup legends such as Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, and Dave Chappelle, all of whom have graced the Improv club stages. The calendar schedules comedians as often as seven nights a week, alternating between big-name headliners and up-and-coming funsters who tickle funny bones with fresh material and abundant energy. Audience members can also munch on their choice of a savory appetizer, such as spinach-and-artichoke dip or fried calamari, while sipping a cocktail to avoid eye contact with the giant rubber chicken sitting at the next table.
