The Moonlight Forest lantern art festival has returned for its second year at the LA Arboretum in Arcadia, California. During the day, the LA Arboretum is home to a beautiful 127-acre botanical garden located in the heart of the historic Rancho Santa Anita nestled up against the hills of San Gabriel Mountains. At night, Moonlight Forest comes alive with a slew of Chinese lanterns that cover the field at the Arboretum with gigantic-size structures, oriental themed archways and a variety of creatures that line the immersive pathway around the grounds.

The pathway takes you through hundreds of lanterns (crafted by artisans from China’s Sichuan province) that reflect different themes: Nature, Children’s Garden, and Chinese Culture. The large peacock at the entrance way is the most eye-popping of them all with its glistening colors and bright bold feathers glowing against the night sky.
During Moonlight Forest, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported into another world with all sorts of lavish magical lanterns depicting exotic animals, shimmering flowers, whimsical pandas climbing bamboo, soaring dragons and intriguing figures from Chinese legends.
Guests observe animals of all kinds including giraffes, zebras, lions, peacocks, and even dinosaurs of gigantic proportions. I especially enjoyed walking through the ocean tunnel swirling with jellyfish, whales, octopus and other sea life.
New this year, is the Ocean Visions exhibit with exotic fish, dolphins and an open-mouthed shark that you can walk through. The designers have also added a Polar Dreams experience featuring playful penguins and cuddly sled dogs.
My favorite display at the lantern festival is the Chinese dragon floating atop of the water. It makes for a stunning photo to share on Instagram! The Chinese Palace and the Chinese Opera are also two great places to snap a photo, especially for the holidays. In addition walking the illuminated pathway, guests can enjoy live entertainment by acrobats, dancers and other performers.
