Have you visited the newest grocery store in town? 2017 brought an exciting change to Pretend City Children’s Museum as Trader Joe’s took over one of the most popular exhibits in the museum; the grocery store! Through the generous support of Trader Joe’s, the grocery store exhibit underwent a major rennovation, which resulted in a new life-like Trader Joe’s store, but on a kid-friendly scale.
Trader Joe’s Exhibit at Pretend City
The exhibit invites children to play in an area that resembles a real place from their community. If your child has ever been with you to Trader Joe’s, now they can grocery shop themselves and take pretend play to the next level in a place they are familiar with.
Ealier this month, SoCal Field Trips had the opportunity to be among the first visitors to preview the new exhibit. My daughter, Field Trip Girl, was thrilled with several of the new additions to the exhibit including a play “demo” area, interactive registers, as well as Trader Joe’s Crew Member Hawaiian shirts and Trader Joe’s branded products as props.
Furthermore, she played for over an hour with the new store displays, shelving, and produce areas that resembled a real Trader Joe’s. Immediately upon grabbing a shopping cart, she picked out some out fresh green peppers and bananas in the produce aisle and weighed them on the scale.
Next, Field Trip Girl went up and down the aisles, looking for the usual household items that we buy. She found the Trader Joe’s organic ketchup, dark roast coffee and strawberry cereal bars that we love.
Of course, she couldn’t forget to buy her favorite treat; Trader Joe’s organic pops. Thankfully though, there were no lollipops handed out at the registers like in the real stores!
Field Trip Girl felt very grown up playing in the Trader Joe’s exhibit. Once she picked out her groceries, she scanned them on the Trader Joy’s toy cash register and put them in her cart. Then we heard the sounds of a real grocery store in action! We heard Field Trip Girl’s receipt being printed out on the register, the cash drawer opening and closing and the bell being rung to call for assistance.
Overall, the new Trader Joe’s grocery exhibit is not only fun, but educational!

Hi Jillian, I've never heard of Pretend City, and I live in So. Cal. I like Trader Joe's, though. It's kind of out of the way for me, but I like their food, especially reheatables. Janice
